Part of being creative means to keep your imagination alive and healthy. To do this artists should take the time to paint and do something different. Painters in a rut should try painting a new subject matter or in a different style. Try looking at contemporary and historical artists. To find their creative voice, artists can paint what they like and enjoy. Artists go through a series of choices when they start a work, even if it may only be subconsciously. What subject matter are they portraying? Figurative, abstract, landscape, still life? What colors are they using? What would happen if you mixed styles of art? What would happen if you limited your palette to only certain colors?
What size canvas is being used? Are traditional paints being used or mixed media? Ask questions, and answer them in a new way if you are tired of what you see in your paintings. Make some adjustments.
Analyze your compositions and determine if they should be simplified or more complex. There are no predetermined guidelines to being creative. But by challenging themselves, anyone can improve their designs by working through these questions and coming up with the answers that work best for them.

Painting Inspiration
Just outside your back door is a field of inspiration for your next painting. While traveling to exotic locations is nice, part of being an artist is expressing the world around you. Turn the items that you see every day into a work of art.

Art for the New Year
Painting outside can be a challenge, a hassle, or an adventure. The sun may not cooperate. Clouds may roll in. But finding a scene to paint is only limited to your imagination!
I enjoy painting en plein air because you never know what is going to happen (wind, rain, clouds, or that perfect ray of light).
During the cold months it is time to start thinking about what plein air competitions will be happening in the spring, summer, and fall.
A new competition was started last year by the Delaplaine Arts folks in Frederick, MD. Easels in Frederick is in its second year and coming up in June 2012. But if you want to compete, you have to submit your application before the end of January! Submit your paintings soon. You never know, you may be one of this year's competition painters! If not, there will be a spectacular painting workshop going on at the same time.
